History of the Sugarloaf Helm
Around the year 1180, The great helm is a design that evolved from the nasal helm, a variant with a flat top and a square profile. From this, an intermediate version called the enclosed helmet was created around the end of the 12th century.
From a nasal helmet, a full face plate was produced and it was pierced to provide vision and ventilation. However, in the 1240, it was replaced by the true great helm which was more widely used.
Later on, a helmet with a more conical top developed and this was the sugarloaf helm. In Spain. this was known as the yelmo de Zaragoza – this was the place where they were introduced in the Iberian Peninsula.
