Coppergate helmet

The Coppergate Helmet is also known as the York helmet. It’s an 8th century Anglo-Saxon piece that was first seen in York, England. It’s one of those excavated treasures for the Jorvik Viking Center, making it a must-have for enthusiasts and helmet collectors.

Here, we offer a beautiful collection of Coppergate helmets that have been designed and crafted like the original.

Characteristics of Our Coppergate Helmet

We have a lot of Medieval helmets based on those of the Early Middle Ages. So, the construction of our Coppergate helmets is derived from the late Roman helmet’s design.

Technically, its construction is quite complex. Aside from its neck guard, our helmet’s basic form is combined with the style of the Pioneer helmet – a lightly-decorated protective gear.

Our Coppergate helmet comes with different parts, namely the iron skull cap that has edgings and ornaments. There’s also a camail that protects the neck, plus two cheek guards featuring sturdy endings as well.

The Helmet’s Cap

Just like the original Coppergate helmet, ours comes with quality-made parts and components.

You’ll find a browband around the head portion, plus a nose-to-nape band that reaches from rear to front.

From there, it narrows downwards and continues to the nose portion.

We’ve put two lateral bands to link the sides of the eyebrow band with the nose-nape band.

Also, there are sub-triangular infill plates set beneath the resulting holes.

All the pieces are riveted together to make for a sturdy and durable Coppergate helmet.

The Brow Band

When we talk about our Coppergate helmet’s brow-band, it doesn’t sport an entirely circular shape. It comes with a gap in front that’s concealed by the nose-nape band that goes over the brow band. It then underlaps at the back for a secure and protective helmet.

Our helmet has quadrant-like cutouts in front, plus rectangular cuts at the sides. These create the eye holes, as well as the connecting points for the cheek guard axis.

Our helmets

Nose-to-Tape Band

The nose-nape band of our Coppergate helmet is approximately 19″ long and 3.5″ wide. This part helps facilitate the eye holes to continue down as the nasal section.

Its lateral bands are attached to the inner parts of the brow and nose-nape bands. There are also infill plates that roughly have a triangular shape. Though do note that the corners are sliced off to prevent overlapping the rivets that hold the bands.

In the past, the sizes vary, and it’s likely because the edges were concealed from view. But with our helmets, we make sure that all of these are sized similarly and are made to perfection.

Cheek Guards and Mail Curtain

For our Coppergate helmet’s cheek guards and mail curtain, these are suspended from the cap. The cheek guards are made of several pieces and are somewhat arched inwards for their width and height. Additionally, each of these is fixed to the brow band via a hinge.

The hinges are bent slightly in half above a circular rod. Then, it’s sliced to make matching slots.

The upper half portion fits over sections that we sliced out of the brow-band. For the lower half, these fit over the cheek guards. All the sections are held in place using rivets to ensure the sturdiness and durability of our Coppergate helmet.

Slots that are available mesh together, and are again, held firmly in place by pins.

Technically, our Coppergate helmet, as well as our other helmets, are secure and crafted intricately. You won’t need to worry about parts falling off since we aim to provide nothing but perfect and quality products.
