The Appearance of the Hussar Helmet

The front of our helmet sports a brim made of steel and has an edge with ridged linings. Not only that, but it features a ribbed cap, as well as a point that’s placed right at the top. Today, the point is only used for aesthetics, but it was for deflecting blows in the past.

Our helmet also has protective cheek pieces that are both hinged and linked to the skull of the helmet. These were present to further improve the security to protect the user’s face.

This helmet comes with one piece of durable and ridged plates that replicate the lames available. It’s a unique feature of this specific type of helmet, as well as its lobster-like tail on the rear.

The Historical Hussar Helmet

Going back to the past, the original Hussar helmet was more popularly known as the lobster-tailed pot helm. Aside from this, it was referred to as the Zischagge’s pot or Harquebusier as well.

Specifically, it was a helmet that was considered as a type of post-Renaissance protective and battle piece. Back then, it was predominantly worn by the Polish hussars.

The Polish hussars were among the primary cavalry units in Poland. They were present in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the 16th to the 18th centuries.

The Hussar helmet became an extremely popular gear around the European areas and was favored by the cavalry and officers. It’s also known that the helmet was originally based on a specific helmet of Ottoman-Turkish types.

Yet as time passed, the Hussar helmet fell out of popularity and use in a lot of European areas. This was during the late 17th century.

Interesting Facts

It’s surprising to learn that this specific helm also had an oriental origin and was developed around the 16th century. Yet, at some time in history, the Hussar helmet was adopted in Europe by the Christian states.

The appearance of this helmet was highly similar to that of the late helmets from Europe. Its very first external appearance featured a protruding peak, a neck guard, cheek protectors, and sliding nose protectors at times.

The European descendant of the Hussar helmet was a popular piece utilized during the Thirty Years War. It was then referred to as the Zischagge.

To note, the Thirty Years’ War was mainly fought in areas of Central Europe. It occurred from 1618 to 1648.
