Later developments of the sallet
The sallet, which is also known as the celata, schaller, or salade, was a war helmet that took the place of the bascinet in the middle of the 15th century. This became almost universal in Germany although it was also popular in other countries such as Italy and France. These were areas that the armet was more popular and widely used.
Through contact with Italy, the Sallet became popular in France, England, as well as the Netherlands. Eventually, it was adopted in Germany. Regional styles were also developed by the great armor manufacturing centers in northern Italy and southern Germany.
The German Sallet Helmet
Although the Sallet helmet and complete armor are based on the German style, these armory could have been manufactured by Italy or vice versa. The German sallet may have also been the product of the combined influences of the Italian sallet and the deep-skulled war hat of Germany. This was a type of chapel de fer helmet that featured a brim.
In the 16th century, the use of the sallet started to fade since it was replaced by the close helm and the burgonet.
