The Thraex Helmet from the Past
In history, the Thraex, more commonly known as Thracian, were Roman gladiators armed with the Thracian styled shield called the parmula. This measured about 60 x 65 centimeters and was square, rectangular, or circular. They were also equipped with the sica or a short sword with a slightly curved blade which is used to aim an enemys unarmored back.
Their additional armor included greaves or a protector for their arm and shoulder, a protective belt on top of a loin cloth, as well as a helmet which featured a high crest and a side plume.
The crest was decorated with feathers and was worn with sockets on the sides. It also included a removable plume that could be attached to the crest. This style replaced the earlier designs of helmets which featured ornaments such as a head of a griffin and a Gorgon.
