During the Archaic period, the Spartans used bronze leg greaves, flanged cuirasses and a helmet. The helms used were often the Corinthian type.
The design and appearance of these helms varied throughout history. These Spartan helms were first standardized which became a preferred design. Yet as time passed, different variants appeared including the Chalcidian helm and the Pilos helm which was utilized by the later hoplites.
Often, these helmets were decorated with either one or more crests with horsehair. Sometimes, they would also use bronze animal ears and horns.
