Uses of the Phrygian Helmet
In history, the Phrygian Helmet was worn by the cavalry of Macedonia. This was commonly seen during King PhilipÂ’s reign. However, his son, Alexander, preferred utilizing the open-faced helmet called the Boeotian helm for his cavalry unit. This was upon the recommendation of Xenophon.
Aside for cavalry units, the Phrygian Helmet was also utilized to represent the infantry troops of Alexander the Great, such as the modern Alexander sarcophagus. The helm was also prominently used around the end of the Classical period and continued further to the Hellenistic era. It replaced the earlier Corinthian style helmet from the 5th century.
