The Historical Hussar Helmet
The Hussar helmet was better known as the lobster-tailed pot helm; however, it was also referred to as the harquebusier or the zischägge’s pot. This helmet was a kind of post-Renaissance combat and protective gear that was utilized by the Polish Hussars.
This piece became well-known in the European area and was popular amongst the officers and cavalry from c. 1600. The Hussar helmet was originally based from an Ottoman-Turkish type of helm. However, it eventually fell out of use in most European areas during the late 17th century. Though surprisingly, this specific helmet had an oriental origin. It was also developed during the 16th century; though at some point, it was adopted by the Christians states in Europe.
Looking at the appearance of the helmet, it clearly was identical to the late European helmets. It first appeared with a projecting peak, cheek protectors, a neck guard, and at times, a sliding nasal protector. The European derivative of the helm was widely used in the Thirty Years War when the piece was known as the zischägge.
