The Mild Steel and Helm Measurements
This Gjermundbu helmet is crafted using mild steel with a thickness of 1.2 millimeters. Mild steel is known to have a carbon content of approximately 0.05 to 0.25% which makes it ductile and malleable. Although it has low tensile strength, the material is easy to form which makes it excellent for use.
When it comes to the size, this Gjermundbu helmet measures 19 centimeters from ear to ear while its front to back measurements is 23 centimeters. Its circumference is approximately 66 centimeters and overall, this helmet weighs a total of 1.7 kilograms.

This helmet takes its name from where it was first discovered at Gjermundbu in Norway. The helmet is an excellent addition to medieval piece collections since the design of this piece is said to be one of the real styles of a classic Viking helm.
With that, this helm was crafted with a high degree of protection in mind. Taking a look at the helmet, it features a skull-like cap with riveted bands around the eye area. This is for both reinforcement and decoration. The helmet also features a single spike that is fixed right at the pieces apex.
As for the helmets eyepiece, it appears just like a simple or plain masquerade mask that also protects the user from blows during activities. For added comfort and to keep this in place, the Gjermundbu helmet also features a chin strap that you can adjust. Generally, this Gjermundbu helmet does not only appear like the classic Viking helm, but it also protects adequately which makes it a favorite among reenactors.

History of the Gjermundbu Helmet
The Gjermundbu helmet is categorized as a Viking helmet. It was first discovered at the Gjermundbu farm in the year 1943. It was found by accident near the municipality of Ringerike – Buskerud, Norway.
Since this incident was reported, an investigation was led which later on confirmed the presence of a burial chamber in the area. It was a historic area that dated all the way back to the Viking period.
The Gjermundbu finds had numerous types of artifacts such as armor, weapons, and the helmet which we now know of as the Gjermundbu helmet. However, it was found in 9 fragments and was later restored. This original piece was made of iron and had a shape like a peaked cap that was made out of 4 plates.
